The drive-failure test
What happens when a drive fails?
Every hard drive fails eventually. How the drives are set up (the RAID level) decides whether that costs you a drive or all of your data.

- Parity spread across the drives rebuilds any one failed drive. A good balance for 3 to 5 drives.
Orange blocks are parity or mirror copies, used to rebuild a failed drive. RAID protects against drive failure, not deletion or ransomware, so we still keep a separate backup.
